60th Birthday Gift

I never know what to get my in-laws.
I usually put my husband in charge, who usually resorts to gift certificates.  Boring.

I want to share with you one of the few times we weren't boring and we took part in giving this gift for my father-in-law's 60th birthday.

This idea was the genius of Holly on "nothing but bonfires" blog.  What an amazing post, right?

Well, my sister-in-law spotted this post and knew it would be the perfect gift for my father-in-law's birthday.  She sent the word out to family and friends who wrote about their favorite memory with my father-in-law.  That was the hard part.  Everyone has the best intentions, but you have to nag a little when you're working with a deadline.  The letters came pouring in and we even had to double up spouses in envelopes.  This is where my sister-in-laws turned it over to me.  They said, "make it look pretty!"

It's hard to make "dude gifts" look pretty.  But I wanted it to be nice enough to display somewhere in their home.  I also wanted it to be simple because at the time I was doing this (13 months ago), I was also doing my all time record of 1,300 decorated sugar cookies at once.  Yes, I was severely sleep deprived and this just had to come together quickly.

I simply bought some neutral pinstripe-ish letter envelopes and stamped them 1-60 with an old set of making memories brand foam stamps.

Then I printed the names, cut them up and folded them over the top to create a sort of tab on top of the letters.  That way he could easily sort though and find a specific person's letter if he wanted to. 60th birthday gift 2

I made a simple tag and tied the letters in a bundle.

Then I found this beautiful glass keepsake box that was the perfect size.  I originally found it at Aaron Brothers but they no longer sell them there.  If you're looking for something similar, I would try a store that does engraved gifts.  They might have something like this.

The gift was a hit to say the least!  He said that it was the best gift ever and meant the world to him.  My father-in-law is well-loved and it gave people an opportunity to express that.  When I read the letter my husband wrote his dad, I was bawling my eyes out and cracking up at all of their inside jokes.  My husband is so close with his dad and talks with him every day.  Yet, without this opportunity might not have taken the time to express his deep appreciation for him.  I know it felt good for me to tell him how much I love him too!

Gifts like this take a little bit of extra effort, but they are beyond worth it.   The glass box is a staple in their home and my father-in-law still talks about how much he loves it.

So thanks to Holly for the idea and thanks to my sister-in-laws for finding the idea and doing the hard part!

Thanks to you, we weren't boring.  This time.

Bundle of Joy Baby Shower

I'm really cold.

I'm that kind of girl, that Jimmy Kimmel talks about.

The girl from California who is miserably cold when it gets into the low 50's outside.  I spend a good portion of my winter snuggled up by my space heater (which Kathryn refers to as my "heat rock").

So when brainstorming a baby shower theme, the first thing that came to mind is...
Baby...it's cold outside.

My friends split the shower duties and put on a darling winter themed baby shower.
The hostess decorated with winter logs, baby mittens, scarves, baby sleepers and cute chalkboards that said, "bundle of joy" and "baby, it's cold outside."

Another friend did an UH-MAZING hot chocolate bar with more yummy flavor combinations than my brain could process.  Other friends contributed a dessert bar, a cute invitation and a fun game.  I don't have pictures of it all, but I thought I'd mention these details in case any of you wanted to recreate this theme.

I did the favors and I couldn't help but resort to my old tricks.

I posted step by step instructions on how to make mitten cookies here.
I was excited about the addition of these little hats too.  (I love it when I use a cutter I bought years ago for no reason).  Just follow the same techniques as the mittens!

I made these cookies while I was sitting by my space heater, with Jimmy Kimmel on in the background.  He was making fun of the LA weather reports complaining of a "cold spell" (aka 50 degree weather).  I could help but laugh out loud that I too am a cold weather wimp!

Would Jimmy laugh at the women who planned a cold/winter themed shower as they suffer through the 40 degree temps?  Ya, he would.  But at least it made for a great party and some cute cookies!

SHINE Marquee

Oh Pinterest, how I love you. How else would I know that I am supposed to only drink from Mason jars and make my own laundry detergent, baby food and play-dough? Wink, wink.

But seriously. Here is my latest Pinterest inspired project...

Our theme for Young Women in Excellence was "Shine" to go with the yearly mutual theme, "Arise and Shine forth that thy light may be a standard for the nations." D&C 115:5

I had seen this most fabulous movie marquee and knew I could tweak this project to fit my needs. And when I get a bee in my bonnet...

The instructions are done beautifully on Oh Happy Day so I won't reinvent that wheel.

These letters are slightly ginormous. You can really make them as big as you can find foam core. These were about two and a half feet tall.

Making those letters was not for the fainthearted (Pick a short word, buy a very sharp exacto knife and plan on some new calluses) but I loved how they turned out. But the bee in my bonnet required some major mechanical genius from the men in our lives. I said, "I want these letters hung up high, so figure it out pretty please."

They earned 925 brownie points for bringing this vision to life.

It was the perfect focal point for the evening. The girls each brought a lamp to place by their project which they turned on after they spoke about what they had done and learned. So by the end of the night all of their lights were shining along with my humongous sign.

The evening was topped off with some Pinterest inspired rainbow jello made by another talented leader

And some Ashleigh inspired cookies made by me because we live too far apart for me to hire her.

The girls were amazing and I about burst with happiness to hear them share the things they learned while doing their Personal Progress. Seeing them shine made my seven new callouses totally worth it.

White Plum Boutique Giveaway

Now that I have gotten over the hurdle of family pictures on the blog, I have another confession...

I have a fleece sweatshirt that I wear. A lot. Ashleigh calls it my "uniform." Even though I will be probably be wearing that fleece until it is threadbare, I may need some other tricks up my sleeve.

Which brings me to introduce you to our new sponsor, White Plum Boutique.

White Plum Boutique is an Online Jewelry Boutique with a Facebook Auction page. The products are designer inspired for less; think Anthropologie meets Forever 21. They specialize in on-trend fashion jewelry for the modern recessionista. Price points are 30%-70% less than retail boutiques and all of the Facebook Auction stuff is free shipping. Each of the pieces are carefully selected; jewelry, infinity scarves, and even some children’s accessories etc.

Are you drooling yet? Here is how it works....

White Plum Boutique says, We have TWO Parts to our business:

a. Sporadically we “auction” a few of our newest items and Swag Bags on our
Facebook Page. Usually jewelry and accessories for women and children.
First come, first sold.

b. Buying is simple. You see a product you like, just write “SOLD” and leave
your email address. We’ll send you an invoice within 24 hours. If you
don’t want your email address public, and you want to speed up the buying
process, you can register with us.

2. White Plum Boutique Website
Our website is where our best-selling items are located.

I visited Hilary from White Plum Boutique and she helped this self proclaimed fleece lover add some sass and sparkle to my life. I was not too ashamed to ask, "What kind of neckline should I wear this with?" and "I adore this necklace so much, can I buy a shirt to go with it," and "Can I really pull off this awesome bracelet?" Hilary is the perfect combination of down to earth kindness and great taste awesomeness so I totally trust her judgement.

The intervention was a success because Ashleigh visited me last Friday and I was wearing a necklace....On a Friday.

She almost didn't recognize me.

So if you need some amazing accessories in your life, here are the details.

You can win this beautiful "swag bag" of beautiful jewelry valued at $150.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

And please visit whiteplumoutique.com and enter the promo code: BEEINOURBONNET through January 12th to get 15% off your entire order!

You are probably all much more hip than I am and you already know what neckline to wear that fabulous purple necklace with. But just in case....

We all scream for Ice Cream

Happy New Year to all of our readers! Are you all charged up for your New Years Resolutions? Sadly my diet only lasted 4 hours. But, there is always another "this Monday" to start.

I'm going out on a limb here in sharing some family pictures. If you haven't noticed, Ashleigh and I like to hide a bit. We had to be talked into putting our pics on the sidebar after blogging for two years. We are both way more comfortable behind the camera.

But this photo shoot was flat out fun and I love the results. Thank you to my dear friend Jan at Jani Photography for the most fun I've ever had taking family pictures.

She suggested we head to the local ice cream joint. First of all, I didn't believe her that 8 people would fit in one booth.

Then I didn't believe her that I would actually want pictures of myself eating. Should I really document that I eat ice cream. It is probably self-evident that I do.

I was not surprised, however, to see that my kids were caught giving each other dirty looks. There are certain things Photoshop can not fix.

I for sure never believed I would post this picture online but my kids requested to do this picture and it makes me laugh. I'm pretty sure I was laughing while Jan was taking the picture.

I definitely doubted Jan got enough pictures to make sure all 8 of us were looking our best. In every photo shoot I have done I snap about 301 pictures and still have to settle on one where kid number (fill in the blank) has a fake or goofy smile. But in her ultimate genius and talent she managed to take the best family picture in only a few shots.

The moral of the story is to trust your photographer. And have fun with your photo session. And try not to cringe when you hit the publish button.
